In 1635 The Boston Latin School was the first publicly funded educational institution to be created. The Boston Latin School is easily one of the oldest and still fully functioning public schools in the county. Education has always been held to high expectations in Massachusetts and continues to be among the highest-ranking public education programs in the United States (Where Massachusetts Places in the U.S. News Best States Rankings, n.d.). Behind these strives in education are legislative motions. Two acts of legislation that lead to significant effects in Massachusetts education are the Massachusetts Ed Reform Act of 1993 and the Every Student Succeeds Act.
